Building a One-of-a-Kind Shopify Experience for Delfi

Some website projects begin with a blank slate.

Delfi Collective was not one of them.

Delfi was already an established and successful fashion brand, with a strong identity, a loyal audience and an extensive product catalogue featuring numerous styles, colours, sizes and variations. The challenge was not to reinvent the business. It was to build a stronger digital home for a brand that already knew exactly who it was.

The new website needed to preserve Delfi’s existing traffic, visibility and brand recognition while improving the experience for the people actually shopping the collection.
In practical terms, that meant one major objective: increase conversion without losing momentum.
So far, the early results are encouraging. Traffic is up. Conversion is up. The site is doing what it was designed to do.

More Than a Storefront

Large ecommerce websites can become complicated quickly.

The more products, variants, collections, images and customer pathways a store contains, the easier it becomes for the experience to feel cluttered or mechanical. Fashion presents an additional challenge because the website cannot merely function properly. It also has to feel like the brand.

Delfi is run by people with exceptional taste and an extremely sharp eye for detail. Every choice matters, from typography and spacing to imagery, product presentation and the way the collections flow together.

The website therefore needed to be more than a functional catalogue. It needed to become a genuine extension of their vision.

That meant creating a shopping experience that feels polished, editorial and distinctly Delfi, while remaining intuitive enough to help customers move quickly from discovery to purchase.

Pushing Shopify Beyond the Template

Shopify is an exceptionally capable ecommerce platform.

Its themes are flexible, its infrastructure is reliable and it provides an excellent foundation for managing products, inventory, payments and customer data. That is precisely why it was the right platform for Delfi.

But there is a considerable difference between configuring a Shopify theme and creating a Shopify website that feels completely original.

Achieving the latter required extensive customization throughout the site.

Product cards, collection layouts, navigation, typography, image behaviour, promotional placements, mobile presentation and numerous small interface details were all adjusted to better reflect the Delfi brand. Some changes were straightforward. Others required working around the natural limitations of a theme-based platform.

The goal was never customization for its own sake. Every adjustment needed to strengthen the experience, clarify the path to purchase or make the website feel more aligned with the brand.

The finished result is a Shopify store that does not feel like a Shopify template.

It feels like Delfi.

Designed Around the Customer

While the visual direction was important, the underlying strategy remained commercial.

The site was built to make browsing easier, product discovery stronger and purchasing more natural. Collections were organized to support both intentional shoppers and customers who simply wanted to explore. Product pages were refined to present variations clearly without overwhelming the customer.

The mobile experience received particular attention, especially because the majority of Delfi’s visitors shop from their phones.

That meant reducing friction, improving navigation and ensuring that the product photography remained the star of the experience across every screen size.

The quieter the interface becomes, the more room the clothing has to speak for itself.

A Website Worth Dressing Up For

No Delfi project would be complete without an appropriately stylish creative director overseeing the work.

Merle, my tuxedo cat and unofficial lead fashionista, was naturally well suited to the role. He is permanently dressed for the occasion, highly attentive to fabric movement and deeply committed to sitting directly on anything currently being reviewed.

His feedback was selective but firm.

There is also one very small, hidden detail within the website that quietly connects this project to someone who used to supervise my work with equal enthusiasm. It will likely remain unnoticed by almost everyone, which is precisely how it was intended.

Some details do not need to be visible to matter.

The Finished Experience

The new Delfi Collective website combines the operational strength of Shopify with a much more tailored and distinctive brand experience.

It supports a substantial catalogue without feeling heavy. It provides customers with a clearer and more enjoyable path through the collection. Most importantly, it gives Delfi a website that feels worthy of the clothing it presents.

The early numbers suggest that customers agree.

Traffic is growing. Conversion is improving. The brand has not lost momentum during the transition.

For a project of this size and complexity, that is more than a successful launch.

It is a strong foundation for what comes next.
