Bringing Fridge of Wonders to Life: Designing a Website That Tastes Like Flavour

Designing a Website That Tastes Like Flavour.

It’s flavour that crackles.
It’s health with personality.

It’s food that somehow feels both deeply nourishing and mischievously fun.

So the design had to do the same

I leaned heavily into the visual language Patricia had already built so beautifully on her labels. Those wonderful little icons became part of the digital storytelling, scattered through the site like flavour notes in a great dish. The colours were pulled right from the jars and bottles themselves: lush greens, bright reds, glowing orange warmth, and that creamy, soft backdrop that gives the whole experience the feel of a sunny Pender Island kitchen.

That idea became a bit of a north star.

At one point, I became mildly obsessed with making the site feel like you were literally holding a bottle of Superkraut in your hands.

The curves, the shapes, the way sections reveal themselves, even some of the custom button work all started following that bottle logic. I probably used more CSS and code on this build than I ever have on a Squarespace project, but this was the perfect brand to push it further. Every little flourish had one goal: make flavour come alive on the screen.

And honestly, it was a tonne of fun.

Pender Island naturally became part of the atmosphere too. There’s something about Patricia’s products that feels inseparable from that place: bright gardens, sea air, wild creativity, healthy abundance, and a little bit of magic in the pantry.

Of course, no creative process in my studio is complete without feline oversight.

Merle, my young tuxedo gourmand, was deeply invested in the success of this project. He may be black and white, but his tastes are decidedly colourful. He spent much of the build inspecting visuals, supervising layouts, and generally giving off the unmistakable energy of a cat who believes all fermentation projects should eventually involve treats.

And in the spirit of Pender, I had to give a little nod to Blackberry too.

BB absolutely loved his time on Pender Island. It was one of his happy places: wandering the property, soaking up the air, and generally living like the tiny king he knew he was. There’s something fitting about having a bit of his spirit woven into a project that celebrates colour, life, and good things made with care.

That’s what this site became in the end.

Not just a storefront.

Not just a digital brochure.

A living extension of Patricia’s work.

Bright, flavourful, healthy, joyful, and unmistakably alive.

Just the way Fridge of Wonders should be.
